In the most formal sense of the word neutering is the surgical procedure where the animals reproductive organs are removed. In most cases this refers to the male dogs testicles, but it can also include female dogs ovaries and uterus (usually called spaying). Neutering has become such a routine procedure that most pets get sent home from the vets on the same day.

Here are some of the advantages of neutering your dog:

Neutered male dogs have less of an urge to mark their territory. They will usually do this by urinating, so this is especially important for house dogs.

Neutered males are also less likely to fight over female dogs

In general, dogs that have been neutered live healthier lives including a reduced risk of breast and prostate cancer.

Neutering female dogs prevents spotting of blood

The dog is less likely to try and “mount” other animals or people
Dogs that have been neutered are less likely to roam

It is a common belief that neutered animals become lazy and gain weight. This may happen as your dog gets older but not because of neutering. Whether your dog is neutered or not you still need to make sure it gets the right amount of exercise and eats a healthy diet.

A common problem that people have when they first get a dog is choosing a name! It’s much more difficult than you first realise to get the perfect name, but it’s important to choose a name as early as possible so the puppy learns from a young age that when you say that word you require its attention.

If you have a male dog, here are dome male puppy names that you could use. These are just suggestions, so if you have any of your own favourites you could add them to the comments section below!

• Murphy
• Biggles
• Ace
• Cisco
• Hammer
• Chopin
• Sherlock
• Amigo
• Cody
• Cinder
• Darth (OK, I couldn’t resist putting this one in, sorry!)
• Pickles
• Baxter (Anchorman anyone?)
• Jasper
• Toby
• Rex
• Frazier
• Rover

As you can tell, I like my names to be a little different. There is always some classics like Rover though that can suit most male puppies. Names are so subjective and everyone has different tastes, so I’d love to hear yours in the comments section!

Personally, I tend to try and shy away from common human names, but sometimes you’ll find that it just fits the personality and look of the puppy.

Getting the right male puppy name is important, as changing it would only cause a lot of confusion for you and the dog later down the line! Dogs are creatures of habit and it would be very difficult to train a dog to use a different name if you decide you don’t like it.
What’s your dog called?
