What Are The Symptoms Of Heat In Canines?
October 10, 2008 by Richard Cross
If you own an unsprayed female dog, then it’s important to know the symptoms of heat so you can attempt to deal with the reproductive cycle. Knowing which part of the cycle your dog is in at any one time can be a great help when caring for your pet.
There are four main stages of the cycle, but in this article we’ll be concentrating on the most fertile period – the Estrus. In this part of the reproductive cycle the ovaries start releasing eggs which can then be fertilized.
Symptoms Of Heat In Canines – The Estrus
1. A discharge of a lightish pink colour. Before this stage there may have been a red blood discharge, but usually in the Estrus it lightens.
2. The dog will probably start flirting with male dogs! When not ready for reproduction, female dogs usually keep their tail down to warn off males, but in the Estrus stage you’ll probably find your dog keeping its tail high in the air. This is one of the easiest symptoms of heat in canines to spot. And be assured, if you can spot it then so can the male dogs!
3. The female may try to get male dogs to mount her by turning away from the dog with tail held high.
This is just one of the stages of heat in canines but is one you’ll definitely want to look out for to help you manage your dogs reproductive cycle.
