10 Best Dog Sweaters for Winter Warmth (2022)

If you have a very small or short-haired dog, he may struggle to stay warm during the winter. For dogs or puppies that are at risk of getting chilly, here are 10 of the best dog sweaters for winter weather.

Have you noticed your dog curling up into a tight ball to try and stay warm? Or even shivering in cold weather?

If so, he might be having a tough time maintaining body heat – and a dog sweater could be a good solution.

Sweaters have become a popular doggie fashion accessory in recent years. I’m not a big fan of dressing up dogs just for fashion reasons, but the best sweaters for dogs combine style with warmth.

They also keep your pup warm without restricting movement or causing discomfort. This is vital – especially if your dog is likely to be wearing a sweater for long periods.

Of course, not every dog needs extra clothing to stay warm. Sweaters shouldn’t be used for breeds with thick coats – unless there is extreme weather or the dog has a condition that makes it difficult to stay warm. For dogs with short hair, however, they can help maintain a much more comfortable temperature.

In this article, I’ve listed 10 of my top picks for the best dog sweaters. These sweaters are mainly designed for warmth first and appearance second – although I think they still look fantastic.

Does Your Dog Need a Winter Sweater?

There’s no doubt sweaters and hoodies look cute on dogs. But does your pet really need one?

The answer depends on your dog’s breed and size.

Dogs evolved from wolves, which have thick coats and a large body for extra warmth. Many dog breeds, such as Siberian Huskies or German Shepherds, still have coats that serve a similar purpose. These dogs don’t need a sweater to stay warm – even in cold climates. In fact, forcing these breeds to wear a sweater or even a non-breathable backpack can cause them to overheat.

Not all canine companions are lucky enough to have a thick coat though. Short-haired breeds or those that are very small, such as Chihuahuas or Dachshunds, can struggle to maintain their body heat in cold weather. These dogs can benefit from clothing such as a winter sweater, raincoat or dog boots.

Regardless of your dog’s size, hair or breed, it’s important to monitor him closely when wearing a winter sweater. If you see signs of overheating, such as panting, scratching or difficulty relaxing, remove the sweater.

It’s also vital to get a sweater that fits correctly. If your dog is going to be wearing a sweater for an extended period, it mustn’t rub (especially underarms) or cause sores.

Best Sweater for Small Dogs

1. Gooby Everyday Fleece Dog Vest

1. Gooby Everyday Fleece Dog VestVIEW PRICE

For small dogs, one of the best dog sweaters is the Gooby Everyday Fleece. It’s available in a range of sizes, but I think it suits smaller breeds best. There are also over 10 different colors, so you’ll be able to choose the option that suits your dog.

The Gooby dog sweater is made from soft polyester. This helps keep your dog comfortable while providing extra warmth in cold winter conditions. It’s not the thickest fleece on the market, but most of the time you don’t want a dog sweater to be too hot.

Aside from the fleece itself, there’s also an O-Ring attachment for a leash – although I don’t think this is strong enough if your dog likes to pull. The material is machine washable, so you can throw it in the wash whenever it gets dirty.

It’s also a durable vest that will last a long time – even with repeated washing. So if you need a high-quality small dog sweater for your dog or puppy, then the Gooby is one of the best options.

Best Sweater for Large Dogs

2. Chilly Dog Boyfriend Sweater

2. Chilly Dog Boyfriend SweaterVIEW PRICE

If you need a large dog sweater, the Chilly Dog Boyfriend is my top pick. It’s available in a range of sizes, but the XXX-Large is suitable for dogs weighing up to 80-120lbs – which covers most breeds.

The Chilly Dog is made from 100% wool, so it provides plenty of warmth for cold winter days. The color dyes are also organic and the sweaters made to follow fair trade guidelines.

One thing to note about the Chilly Dog is that each sweater is handmade. This means there might be small variations in size and color – although the differences shouldn’t be huge.

My favorite feature of the Chilly Dog is its classy design. Unlike other dog sweaters, which are often bright and garish, the Chilly Dog provides a distinguished appearance. It’s probably not thick enough for the coldest weather, but for providing some extra heat it’s a comfortable option – plus it’s available in bigger sizes than many alternatives. For these reasons, it’s one of the best sweaters for large dogs.

Best Dog Christmas Sweater

3. Blueberry Vintage Ugly Christmas Sweater

3. Blueberry Vintage Ugly Christmas SweaterVIEW PRICE

If you’re looking for a Christmas dog sweater with the classic “ugly” design, then the Blueberry Festive Sweater is probably the best choice. With a red and white color scheme, blocky reindeer and ugly patterns, it’s the perfect look for a festive dog!

The Blueberry Festive is made from 100% acrylic yarn. This provides a comfortable warmth and also makes it a durable option. The sweater is machine washable and you can even tumble dry it (unlike wool sweaters).

One of the benefits of acrylic yarn is that it’s stretchable, which means it’s easier to put on your dog. It also doesn’t feel like a “heavy” material, which is important for your dog’s comfort. The Blueberry probably isn’t thick enough for the coldest weather, but for providing extra warmth along with some Christmas cheer it’s one of the best dog sweaters.

Other Great Dog Sweaters

4. PAWZ Road Winter Dog Hoodie

4. PAWZ Road Winter Dog HoodieVIEW PRICE

If you want to buy a warm hoodie for your dog this winter, the PAWS Road is one of the best options. It’s a high-quality and durable sweater with strong stitching – plus it looks great.

Unlike the first three dog sweaters on this list, the PAWZ is made with a hoodie design (although the hood is just for style). There’s an inner fabric layer that acts to keep your dog warm in cold conditions, along with a stylish pattern.

The PAWZ is also available in five different sizes, including an XL that’s suitable for dogs with a back length of up to 25 inches. So if you’re struggling to find a dog sweater for a big dog that doesn’t cost a fortune, it’s a great choice.

One of the differences between the PAWZ and other dog sweaters is that it has a button up design, rather than a pull on. There are also buttons to remove the hood if you feel it’s getting in the way.

A downside to the PAWZ is that the interior is a little rougher than other options. If your dog has sensitive skin and very short hair, you might want to look for a softer option. For most canines, however, the PAWZ is a stylish option that can help maintain warmth in cold weather.

5. Blueberry Pet Classic Knit Dog Sweater

5. Blueberry Pet Classic Knit Dog SweaterVIEW PRICE

Another stylish dog coat for small dogs is the Blueberry Classic Cable Knit. It has a knitted style that provides a different appearance to many of the other sweaters on this list – plus it’s made from acrylic yarn so it’s machine washable.

The sweater is designed to provide warmth on cold nights, although it’s not thick enough for extreme cold conditions. The knitting technique provides a pleasant texture, while the material is soft and comfortable for a dog.

A drawback to this sweater is that it’s only available for small-medium size dogs. The biggest version that’s currently available is suitable for dogs with a back length of up to 16″, compared to 25″ for the PAWZ.

Even so, if you have a small dog and want a warm sweater that’s not too heavy, it’s a great choice. The wide range of colors, including pink, yellow, red and blue, also mean it’s easy to find one that suits your dog.

6. Kuoser Cozy Plaid Dog Jacket

6. Kuoser Cozy Plaid Dog JacketVIEW PRICE

If you’re looking for a classier dog sweater for your pet, the Kuoser Cozy is a great choice. With its “British-style” plaid design, it’s certainly got a sophisticated appearance.

The Cozy dog sweater is made from a combination of polyester filler and polyester/cotton exterior. The outer layer is also water resistant, while the inner fleece layer is designed to provide extra warmth.

It also has a Velcro closing design. Unlike many sweaters for dogs, which need to be pulled over the head, the Velcro makes the Kuoser easy to put on. It’s also durable and provides protection from the wind.

There are four colors available – including red, green, beige and brown – along with a variety of sizes. So if you need an elegant dog vest that provides great value for money, the Kuoser is an option to consider.

7. Scheppend Adidog Hoodie

The Adidog is obviously inspired by the Adidas range of hoodies. So if you like the casual Adidas style, you can now get it for your dog too!

The good news is that the Adidog isn’t just a gimmick. It provides a soft and comfortable fit for your dog, while providing extra warmth in the winter months. It’s also available in a range of sizes, including the 9XL which fits dogs with a long back length of up to 29.5″.

The hoodie is well made, with decent quality materials and strong construction. Most dogs will enjoy the feel of the soft cotton against their fur, while the button up design means you don’t need to pull it over your dog’s head.

One thing to note about the Adidog is that it’s designed to cover most of the hind legs, which isn’t the case with many sweaters. This provides extra warmth, but some dogs may find it restricting. There are also reports that the Adidog logo sometimes comes off in the wash and that the sizing runs small.

Even so, if you’re looking for a cute hoodie for your dog that’s comfortable and provides warmth, the Adidog is definitely one to consider.

8. Zack & Zoey Basic Hoodie

8. Zack & Zoey Basic HoodieVIEW PRICE

If you’re looking for something a little more plain than the Adidog, the Zack & Zoey Basic is an excellent hoodie that’s available in a range of colors. It doesn’t have the hind leg coverage, which many dogs will prefer, and is also machine washable.

The hoodie is made from a combination of polyester and cotton, which provides a comfortable fit. It isn’t thick enough for extreme conditions, but for providing a bit of extra warmth on cold days it’s a great choice.

A bonus of the Zack & Zoey is the wide color palette you can choose from. With options ranging from light blue to pink, you can get your dog something that complements his fur! There are also eight size options, with the largest fitting dogs with a back length of up to 30″.

A downside to this hoodie is that it’s long and covers further down the belly than many options. This means it covers male dog’s “manhood,” so you’ll either need to use a band to keep the fabric out of the way or avoid letting your dog outside while wearing it. Otherwise there’s a good chance of soiling the fabric.

Despite this drawback, the Zack & Zoey is a great option if you need an indoor sweater to keep your dog warm. The combination of sizes and colors also means it’s suitable for almost any short-haired breed.

9. Stinky G Anchor Sweater

9. Stinky G Anchor SweaterVIEW PRICE

If you want a dog sweater with a unique design, then the Stinky G Anchor could be a great choice. It doesn’t come in large sizes for big dogs, but for small breeds it’s a cute option that also provides extra warmth.

Unlike the Zack & Zoey, the Stinky G isn’t so long that it causes problems when your dog wants to go to the toilet (as long as you get the right size for your pet). The fabric is also comfortable and made to a high standard, so it should last a long time.

Something to note about this sweater is that it doesn’t have a harness opening. If you want to take your dog outside, you’ll either need to attach the leash to the collar or not wear the sweater.

10. Chilly Dog Grey Cable Sweater

10. Chilly Dog Grey Cable SweaterVIEW PRICE

For dogs that enjoy the sophisticated look, the Grey Cable Dog Sweater is one of my favorite options. It’s made from 100% wool and organic plant dyes, and is available in a range of sizes to suit dogs up to 80lbs in weight (although make sure you measure your dog and don’t just rely on the weight guide).

As the Grey Cable is made from wool, it provides a soft and comfortable fit. The wool provides plenty of warmth, which is great for cold weather. It’s also machine washable, although it can’t be tumble dried.

While the most important thing when buying a dog sweater is that it’s comfortable and keeps your pup warm, there’s no denying the Chilly Dog Grey Cable is also very cute. So you’re sure to get plenty of compliments on your dog’s behalf!

The best dog sweaters can help keep your dog warm during cold months – plus they look great! While I don’t recommend raincoats or sweaters for dogs with thick coats, they can be useful for short-haired breeds or those that have trouble keeping warm.

I hope this page helps you choose the best dog sweater for your dog. If you have any questions, please let me know in the comments!
